Karnataka terror plot: Bangalore rowdy held in Hyderabad spilled terror beans

BANGALORE: A small-time Bangalore-based rowdy arrested in Hyderabad spilled the beans, helping the police crack the terror module in Karnataka. The tip-off given by Hyderabad police to Karnataka police about six months ago on a large terror-module operating in Bangalore and other parts of the state made City Crime Branch (CCB) cops of Bangalore act on it. They kept tabs on the module by intercepting mobile calls and finally nabbed the 11 terror suspects in Bangalore and Hubli on August 26.

The small-time rowdy, who police sources declined to name, provided vital inputs on the terror module as some of the suspects were known to him. "The tip-off from the Andhra police made us work on the suspects. Few suspects must have come in contact with this rowdy element and confided plans of their network," sources in the home ministry said.

The CCB made meticulous planning and collected evidence before nabbing the accused. "CCB sleuths had information on possible terror attacks in Karnataka. Equipped with some clues, the team worked for almost four months and first arrested five men in Hubli and followed it up in Bangalore," said DG-IGP Lalrokhuma Pachau. The 11 accused had hatched plans to kill MPs, MLAs and two journalists.

Following the inputs provided by the suspects, the CCB arrested their accomplice 21-year old Obedulla-Ur-Rehman in Hyderabad on Friday. He was allegedly on a mission to kill two corporators from the Greater Hyderabad City Corporation and a local Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP) leader. Intensifying the crackdown on the terror module busted in Karnataka, Maharashtra police picked up four suspects in Nanded for alleged links with the 11 suspects.

Government sources said during interrogation, those arrested on Thursday confessed that the module had planned to attack a nuclear installation and vital navy and army establishments located in south India following directives from their LeT and HuJI handlers based in Pakistanand Saudi Arabia.
